An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you load a profile via a QR code or activation link. You can keep your normal SIM active for calls and SMS while using the eSIM for data abroad.
Most phones launched in the last 4–5 years are eSIM-compatible: iPhone XS / XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 / Note 20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer. Make sure the device is carrier-unlocked.
The validity period (e.g. 30 days) starts when the eSIM first connects to a partner network — not when you buy it. So you can purchase ahead of your trip.
